Where AI comes into this

Everything on this site is written by people. Nothing in the feed is generated, completed, rewritten, or tidied up by a machine. If a piece moves you, a person wrote it.

What the AI actually does

One thing: it reads a piece before it goes on the public feed, and decides whether it looks safe to show to strangers. That is a safety check, not an editor and not a judge of writing. It cannot change a word of what you wrote.

It only runs when you choose the public feed. Writing you keep to yourself, or send as a private link, is never sent to it.

It gets things wrong

Automated checks are blunt. Yours may be held back when there is nothing wrong with it — dark, sad, strange and blunt writing is exactly what this site is for, and the check is told as much, but it still misfires. When it is unsure, a person looks instead.

Nothing is deleted when a piece is held. Your copy stays yours, and your private link keeps working, whatever the check decided.

The prompts

The daily prompts come from a mix of writing by hand and drafts generated by a model, and an algorithm decides which one lands on which day. Whatever the source, every prompt is read, edited and approved by a person before anybody sees it.

How this site was built

Most of the code running this site was written by an AI model, working to a person's direction. What it should do, how it should behave, what it refuses to do, and what belongs on these pages were all human decisions, and the result was reviewed and tested before it went up.

Your writing is not training data

What you write is not used to train any model, here or anywhere else. The safety check sends the piece to a language model to be classified and keeps nothing beyond the verdict. See the privacy note for the rest.
